| Abstract Students will understand how to compare fractions.
Lesson fundamental understandings:How are fractions compared?Essential
            Questions:

 Consider
the advantages and disadvantages of working with fractions.

Prerequisite Skills Students will have prior knowledge of how to work with fractions
(addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Teacher
            Information/Situations/Setting/TimeTeacher
information: Students and teacher will interact to discuss the
            situation provided below.
Students will work in pairs to
brainstorm. Select groups will present their solution on either
portable white boards or overhead transparencies.
 Teacher will
            use inquiry questioning.
 Situation:
 Students will be given an
advertisement from a hamburger restaurant claiming that their
1/2-pound hamburger is 50% more than the 1/3-pound hamburger of
another restaurant, and asked if it’s an example of false
            advertising.
Possible student solutions to claim the
            advertisement is correct:
 - Take 1/2 of 1/3 and add it to 1/3 to
            get 1/2.
 - Do the same after conversion to decimals.
 -
            Calculate 150% or 1.5, of 1/3, to get 1/2.
 Possible student
solutions to claim the advertisement is false:
 - Calculate 50% of
1/2, which is one fourth, and subtract from 1/2 to get less than
            1/3.
 - Calculate the difference 1/2- 1/3 = 1/6, which is not one
            50% (1/2).
 - Take 1.5 times 0.33333 to get 0.499995, which is
            less than .5.

 Key Concept
The 50% is of the smaller
            fraction ( 1/3).
The concept of percent of increase will be
            revisited in future lessons.

 Setting/ Time
 This
lesson will take one 90-minute period or two 45 minute periods.

Assessment The teacher will monitor the problem solving activities and
provide feedback.Homework: Students will find and analyze
advertisement(s) similar to the situation provided in class.

 Student Activity/TasksStudents will
discuss as a class the hamburger restaurant situation. Students
will share their methods and process of reaching the solution.
Teacher will monitor student progress and guide as needed.
 Students will explain logic.

Enrichment/Alternate Activity: Students will be given a newspaper and asked to locate comparable
advertisements, which use fractions. Students will work in pairs to
develop critical thinking skills. Cross-Curricular: Possible use: application of English system of measurement. Technology
Requirements/Tools/Materials Students may use calculators to compare fractions. Class may
            use a weight scale.
