Once students have explored themes of the play via the essay, and once students have explored how a web sites's layout functions in terms of communication they are prepared to indulge in the research and web authoring component of the unit. Students will learn to connect thematic issues from the play to contemporary ones, thus adding value to the work of William Shakespeare by 'seeing' for themselves that the issues dealt by the works are ones that are not limited bu temporal dimensions. By presenting their work to peers the student gains a sense of value by being able to see his work and comparing it to those of web sites already on the net.
Standard 7. Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and non print texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience. Standard 9. Students develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles. Standard 7. Standard 4. Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.
Student must be able to communicate with peers, download E-texts, soundbites, and images from the internet and convert those to a web authoring tool.
*Design Criteria- All web pages must be organized and audience specific. Lay out must be easily understood and the essay from lesson 1 must be layed out within the file free of spelling and grammar mistakes. *Presentation Criteria- Web Page must be presented in an understandable manner, explanations of strategic lay out choices must be given.
3- Using Claris Home Page and Netscape Navigator students research the net and design a web site in which they focus on one of the following themes: Love, Hate, Rivalries. They use the following leading questions to help get a research foundation- 1. How does (chosen theme) affect the action of Romeo & Juliet ? 2. How does ( chosen theme) affect the lives of contemporary teens? 3. How does communication, or lack there of, affect (chosen theme) in the play? 4. What are the illusion and reality of (chosen theme). According to their discoveries, from the question and research, students design a web site in which they explore their discoveries about the play and the chosen theme comparing and contrasting how the chosen theme affects the action of the play and issues of their contemporary world. Students present the site to the class and explain the stylistic decisions they made.
