Abstract  (help)

At the completion of this lesson, students will have a greater appreciation of the diversity of Plants in our world. Students will see the importance of plants in everyday life, their neccessity in our society and their beneficial by products, which we have come to depend upon. Students will research the uses of plants in everyday life, and will demonstrate this knowledge in the form of a web page. Students will also explain their choices within their web pages. The students will become familiar with Internet search engine functions, saving graphics, creating a web page complete with graphics, text and a "hot link" to their email address. This will all take place simulataneously with the student learning with regard to the plant kingdom and the importance of our preserving our plant resources.

National Standards  (help)

THE INTERDEPENDENCE OF ORGANISMS Human beings live within the world's ecosystems. Increasingly, humans modify ecosystems as a result of population growth, technology, and consumption. Human destruction of habitats through direct harvesting, pollution, atmospheric changes, and other factors is threatening current global stability, and if not addressed, ecosystems will be irreversibly affected.

Pre-requisite Skills  (help)

Students must already have basic computer skills under their belt before they attempt this lesson. Some familiarity with graphics programs will be a plus, but is not necessary. Students must know how to save to disk.

Teacher Information  (help)

This lesson is a bit more advanced, so I recommend being familiar with web page design before teaching it to a class. In this lesson, students will be creating a web page using the images saved in Part 1 of this lesson. At the completion, students will have a web page with a background, 10-15 images and explanations of how each picture relates to plant. In addition, I usually have the students insert their web address as a hotlink so others may contact them about their research once they are done and the work is uploaded to the web. This, however, is optional. This lesson is not for the faint-at-heart technologically. In addition, be ready to be on your feet all period long answering questions and monitoring progress.

Assessment  (help)

This project is assessed in the following manner in my class: The completed web page must have the following: - Background image - 10-15 representative images - Explanation of each image - email address All must be saved to a disk for teacher review

Student Activity  (help)

Flower Power Part 2 Today's activity will complete the project that we began last class period. You will need your disk of images that you saved last time. Today you will be placing your images in a web page that will be uploaded to the school's web site, however only complete and accurate projects can be place here. You will determine if your page is uploaded or not, depending on your work today. I will be demonstrating how to place a background image and your saved images, text and your email address within a web page, and also how to save them. It is important that you take notes on how to do each on of these steps. Once you have observed me, it is your chance to make your own web page. I will be looking for the following items in your web page when I grade your project: - Background image - 10-15 representative images - Explanation of each image - email address Of course I will be available to assist you as you work today but it is important that you stay on task as you complete this project.

Technology Requirements/Integration  (help)
