Beginning in 1999, Mainland began participating in the Internet Science and Technology Fair (ISTF) - an Internet research competition held each year. It is sponsored by the College of Engineering at the University of Central Florida. For the past four years, Mainland's teams have been coached by Mrs. Cathy Colwell, Mainland's physics teacher. Each year, teams are formed in September and meet each Wednesday through the end of February preparing the project's website. Each of Mainland's four entries in this contest have won 1st place and are featured in the ISTF Hall of Fame. UCF announces each year's winners in early May. For WaterGates, the students chose the national critical technology category of manufacturing with a technical application of pollution avoidance, focusing on two-stroke engines in marine environments. Our product is a modified two-stroke engine that if utilized in personal watercraft should optimize combustion while reducing cross-scavenging flow. http://mainland.cctt.org/istf2002/
