Beginning in 1999, Mainland began participating in the Internet Science and Technology Fair (ISTF) - an Internet research competition held each year. It is sponsored by the College of Engineering at the University of Central Florida. For the past four years, Mainland's teams have been coached by Mrs. Cathy Colwell, Mainland's physics teacher. Each year, teams are formed in September and meet each Wednesday through the end of February preparing the project's website. Each of Mainland's four entries in this contest have won 1st place and are featured in the ISTF Hall of Fame. UCF announces each year's winners in early May.
For TurtleLights, the students chose the National Critical Technology category of Environmental Quality with the technical application of Environmental Monitoring Sensors. Our research involves the adaptation of light meters to help resolve the problem of light pollution on the ecosystems of endangered sea turtles.
